AbstractThe scene comprising initial and in-service teacher- education is, as a consequence, gradually becoming characterized by the need for more dynamic conceptions than those so far practised. The outlined scene actualizes a range of perspectives and questions concerning the policy and strategy to be chosen. How could be initial teacher- education and in-service training support the principle of life-long learning among sudent teachers and teachers? Which kinds of problems and possibilities may an eleborated life-long learning approach bring about in different phases of teacher-education? However it is not appropriate nor possible to give a complete coverage in one contribution. The present problems and future perspectives of initial teacher-education in Finland have recently been described and analysed in another context. Thus we shall set out to concentrate on the idea of life-long learning within the framework of in-service education. Even this sector is manifold and contains too many aspects to be covered in one article. The perspective chosen attempts first to discuss current activities and problems related to the content and to the structure of in-service education in teacher-education. Second, life-long learning conceptions will be discussed as a part of a changing reality of in-service training in teacher-education. However, it is necessary to begin by briefly presenting an overview on the present state of the art. (DIPF/orig.).
