| Abstract | The author investigates the purposes and consequences of assessment within schools with respect to teaching and learning, within education systems with respect to accountability, and within economies with respect to the division of labour and the articulation of the school system with labour market. She argues that changes in assessment reflect changes in the priorities and preoccupations of society as a whole, especially with regard to the increasing complexity of the division of labour and the increasing regulation of so many aspects of social life.... The evolution of examinations and other assessment procedures is one of the most characteristic features of modern, mass education systems. This book provides a unique comparative account of how this process took place in two very different countries - England and France. By tracing the similarities and differences in the ways in which English and French education systems provided for the assessment of occupational competence, for managing the growing need for educational and social selection and for social control, this book explores fundamental issues in the sociology of educational assessment.
