Abstract	The presented document is the national study of Belgium on the division of responsibilities at national, regional and local level in the education system. It was based on a questionnaire survey drawn up by the Committee on Culture, Education and the Media of the Standing Conference of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe. Altogether 23 European countries participated in this survey. It aims at reflecting the allocation of responsibilities between the central government and local as well as regional authorities. The justification for the study was the current trend in a growing number of countries towards decentralization, deregulation and autonomy in the education system. The study contains a brief introduction to the political system of the country including some basic facts on legislation, administration and national particularities. To understand the division of responsibilities at the national level an outline of the education system is given referring to school adminstration, allocation of funds, teaching staff, educational content, higher education, educational research, adult education and the central question: centralization or decentralization.
