| Abstract | The development of education in Estonia has been influenced by many different countries which have ruled over it in the past. The first part of the document describes education in Estonia from the 13th century to 1918. The second part gives an overview of education from 1918 to 1940 reviewing the school system, the institutional conditions for the development of pupils' personalities, conducting educational activities, and finally the school modernization movement. These years were the only period of independence in the history of the Estonian nation before restoring it in August, 1991. The third part highlights the main characteristics of the Estonian education system during the Soviet period. (DIPF/St.). |
