| Abstract | The article gives a brief historical insight into science in Bulgaria from the 19th century to the social change after 1989 and its impact on research and development. The following part presents facts and statistics concerning science staff, its qualifications and spezialization, publication activities, its distribution with respect to the Bulgarian research institutions. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is described as the major research institution so far. It is shown that the legislative framework and the lack of funding are the major obstacles in the development of scientific research activities. Finally there is drawn attention to the new East-West relationship and its importance for the integration of Bulgarian's research capacities into the European scientific community. (DIPF/St.). |
