Abstract	In some regions of Europe majorities try to dominate minorities. That is why cultures are struggling to survive by fixing on a limited number of characteristics (religion, race, language), which the author calls "markers of identity". In this context he makes an attempt to describe linguistic situations. Finally he draws conclusions for the educational field: "All this suggests more tasks for the curriculum, and time is limited. People are capable of learning more than was formerly thought, but pressure on time is bound to force selectivity of material. We can recognize that one's learning needs for a lifetime cannot any more be met by a once-off process in childhood or youth, it will have to be a recurrent process, and we could give more thought to providing the tools for future learning in a system of 'éducation permanente'. This should include understanding of the facts and nature of cultural diversity, and the strands that link cultures in a common human framework." (DIPF/Ba.).
