| Abstract | "Throughout the world a great deal of effort and money has been expended in the name of educational change. Much of it has been misdirected and some of it wasteful. This book assists people inside and outside schools to bring about positive change by helping them to define the purposes behind change, the processes needed to achieve change, and the results which they should expect. By linking the Why, What and How of change, the authors provide both a theoretical critique and practical advice to assist all those committed to changing and improving schools." The authors "construct a coherend and comprehensive message" and therefore deal with many aspects of the problem: 1) a review of the waves of educational reform in the 1980s and 1990s and 2) a review of the school effectiveness studies from the early days to more sophisticated views today, 3) the conditions and strategies of a successful school improvement process, 4) the key components of the school development planning, 5) school cultures "which build collaboration among teachers to promote school improvement", 6) an examination of the literature on educational leadership, 7) the teaching- learning process which also has to be changed and improved, 8) community support for change, 9) assessment and evaluation of improvements.
