AbstractThis article uses data from a study of 14- to 18-year-old Londoners to consider how 'race' divides the experiences and hence the identities of young people living in London. It pays particular attention to their national identities and their orientation to the Europe in which they live and to which they belong.... The findings of this study indicate that young people's national identities were differentiated by colour and, to a lesser extent, by gender. Although almost all of the young people which were interviewed were British born and all attended schools where there were at least some pupils from other ethnic groups, discourses which constructed whiteness as synonymous with Englishness or Britishness were common. The study of racialised differences is, therefore, important to the study of youth. Childhood and youth in Europe can thus only be understood if account is taken of differences between young people in discourses and positioning. The complexities of the ways in which 'race'/nation, gender and social class differentiate children's and young people's lifes thus need to be kept in close view. (DIPF/orig.).
