Abstract	This contribution deals with variation in the timing of adolescent transitions in terms of the unique social and political situation of German unification. The first aim was to study commonalities and differences in the timing of prototypic adolescent transitions between former East and West Germany soon after unification, thereby obtaining a baseline for the assessment of future changes.... In addition to studying the timing of transitions in the normal population, the authors were interested in groups that were confronted with adverse living conditions in childhood, such as family break-ups, economic hardships, and multiple relocations.... The second aim of the research was to analyse wether a high load of adversity would correspond to earlier transitions.... The third aim was to shed some light on adolescents' behaviors that can be seen as precipitations of previous experience with adversity. The authors close this contribution by discussing the main results against the backdrop of additional knowledge of life and development in the two Germanies. (DIPF/orig./ Kr.).
