Abstract	Growing up in Europe brings together accounts of children's and young people's lives from eastern, southern, northern and western European regions and countries and from a variety of thematic perspectives. This collection - the first of its kind - marks a real step forward in the development of European perspectives in this field, both in the range of contexts represented by its contents and the impetus for theory and research which the contrasting themes offer the reader. Following two introductory chapters which describe and critically evaluate European childhood and youth research as new fields of social studies, the contributions are arranged under four broad themes: 1. Childhood and youth in intercultural comparison; 2. Childhood, youth and social change; 3. Social circumstances and cultural worlds; 4. Prospects for research, policy and practice.
