Abstract | This paper focuses on the relations between administrative texts, space- time paths and organisational processes in Japanese preschools. I argue that an examination of the profuse array of texts - forms, rosters, records, files, checklists, questionnaires, notices, tables, and reports - found in these institutions may allow us to understand until now little explored characteristics of such institutions. More specifically, my contention is that these documents are both mediums which incorporate certain notions about organised caretaking, and a major means through which preschools are managed as organisations.
