Abstract	In this survey the authors try to give a comparative overview of the legal status of the teacher in the various countries belonging to the European Union. lt aims at discovering the common points and also the main differences in the teacher's legal status throughout the European Union. Their comparison was based on the information provided by correspondents from all European Union countries, in response to a questionnaire concerning the main topics of the teacher' s status. The separate reports of all these correspondents are included elsewhere in this document. This overview remains necessarily very general. Anyone who would like more information on any specific topic, is invited by the authors to consult the national reports on the matter, and the references cited in them. Most country reports concentrate on the status of teachers in primary and secondary education, while others also deal with the position of teachers in post-secondary education and at universities. Since not all country reports provide the reader with information on the latter category, in this survey, the word 'teacher' will refer only to teachers in primary and secondary education, unless mentioned otherwise.
