Abstract | A mandatory period of residence abroad is a feature of Modern Language degrees in British universities.... This book seeks not only to identify and disseminate best practice in the preparation and evaluation of this major aspect of our degrees but also to highlight current related research. The "Year Abroad" represents a substantial investment on the part of students and tutors alike, as well as an opportunity for personal and linguistic development. Yet, how various institutions arrange to prepare the students so that they can fulfill the linguistic, cultural and developmental objectives; how they monitor progress; how they assess the outcome ... is still very much an individual matter. It has been this book's project to elicit examples of good practice which can inspire practitioners in other institutions and enhance the students' experience. Its ambition is also to promote a critical appraisal of current practice and further reflexion: it maps out current approaches; assesses their consequences; highlights the state of research.
