Abstract | At first the author briefly describes the situation in the eastern part of Europe before the transition started in 1989/90. Than he presents different theories and models of freedom and control in the field of education. He emphasizes the role of teaching staff in this context. "The contemporary situation is characterized by a discussion of different concepts for the future of education. Some call for intensification of methods of symbolic control on the regional level. Others, and in particular teachers, call for increased school autonomy and academic freedom for schools as well as for instructors, and for the formulation of marked models for the education system."
