Abstract | In order to better meet the industrial expectations concerning the professional developments and the improvement of qualifications, the higher education system has come up with the following training schemes: - the I. U. T. s (Instituts Universitaires de Technologie, founded in 1966) which offer a two-year training for technicians after secondary school, - the I. U. P. s (Instituts Universitaires Professionalisés, created in 1991). The I. U. P. s offer training for "Ingenieurs-Maîtres" in three years. They accept applicants who have already successfully passed the first year in higher education. The courses offered are in special disciplines and are coordinated with industrial companies; they are meant for economic areas which in the future will be particularly important: industries, commerce, information and communication, banking and insurances. The I. U. P. s offer their students a solid training in basic knowledge, so that the "Ingenieur Maître" is capable of keeping up with the development in his/her professional life. The curriculum is internationally oriented; usually at least one foreign language is obligatory (some I. U. P. s even require two or three languages). Through the reform of the technical courses of June 1994 the significance of the I. U. P. s within higher education is becoming even bigger, while the coherence and transparency of the technical courses have been improved. The reform provides that all technical courses have to be included in the programme of the I. U. P. s: DEUST, technological DEUG, technological "licenses" and "maîtrises", "maîtrises" of applied informatics in business studies, and "maîtrise" of science and technology.
