Abstract	The author has organised his talk in the following way: He will mention some of the major challenges for the school towards the 21st century and some of the ways in which these challenges can be taken up by the school and by teacher education according to the speakers and the discussions held. He intends to give some key elements of how the European dimension is made concrete as explained by some of the participants. He will not attempt to give definition of the European dimension; it is impossible to do so, but he will refer to two basic texts on the European dimension; the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of education of 24 May 1988 of the European Union and Resolution 1111 of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He will reflect on some elements in relation to teacher education and training discussed or mentioned at this conference but with reference each time to perspectives which will be offered or are offered by action programmes of the European Union in the field of education in general and teacher education and training in particular.
