| Abstract | This book comprises 14 essays concerning the project of democratizing education in both Russia and Australia. The philosophical underpinnings of education in and for democracy are given in chapter 2 (Aspin). The chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6 present an overview of the political, legal and constitutional context of reform efforts in the above mentioned countries (Dneprov, Tkachenko, Birch, Adamsky). The chapters 7 and 8 "explore ways in which democratic values and principles may be embodied in government policy towards education and given expression in system-wide structural reforms" (Lenskaya, Dunstan). The form that increased democratization can take at the local level by school-based reforms is addressed in the chapters 9, 10 and 11 (Spicer, Gazman, Dimmock). The implications of democratization for the life of the children in the school are discussed in chapters 12, 13 and 14 (Herriman, Tubelsky, Froumin). (DIPF/St.). |
