Abstract	The ten articles of the book have a common framework "which has to do with the intersection between organization and productivity in schools: How do the various arrangements of schooling - the way it is structured - affect the results?" Three aspects of organizational influences are analyzed; they constitute the 3 sections of the book: "1) the influence of school and district size, 2) the impact of recent large-scale reform efforts in the United States and in England and Wales, 3) current proposals for organizational changes to improve outcomes." Within section 2 "each chapter describes the process and elements of reform, and the evidence to date about its impact." Examples are given from school reforms in two US States and the changes through the 1980s reform package of the Thatcher government in Great Britain. One article shows "how the policy environment shapes instruction in high poverty classrooms" in the US. The chapters in section 3 (reform proposals) examine a) the importance of parent, student, and teacher interaction, b) the policy of teacher empowerment, c) the "implications of a learner-centered organization for schools's use of space, time, skills, and curriculum", d) "the politics of educational productivity in light of systemic reform."
