Abstract	This paper examines to what extent members of boards of traditional male fraternities have more access to the Dutch elites. The study covers different types of elite positions during the period 1960 und 1980 and looks at all 1660 members of boards of the most traditional male fraternities between 1920 and 1960. The aims of this paper are: c. to explore the existence of a functional equivalence for such elite universities in those societies like the Netherlands - b. to establish whether the trend in mobility found for the general populations of the European societies during the 20th century can also be found for the mobility of the elite in the Netherlands. The results indicate that 1. the functional equivalence of the few French and Anglo-Saxon elite universities is the traditional male fraternity within each university of the Germany type 2. the importance of this functional equivalence of elite universities did not diminished during the studied period, nor the importance of other ascribed characteristics, like nobility and high bourgeoisie famileis. This paper discusses two possible explanations for these unchanged effects. A methodological explanation which states that the cause should be sought in the studied period, and a substantial explanation which falls back on the distinction between structural and circulation mobility.
