| Abstract | This study deals with the following question: are the main training institutions in Brazil adapted to face the challenges posed by structural adjustment? After looking at a few general assumptions regarding vocational education under conditions of unemployment and adjustment, we provide a brief description of recent changes in the Brazilian labour market. We then examine the major training agency for industrial workers in Brazil (SENAI) focusing on the characteristics and performance of SENAI graduates, the structure and nature of courses, and the relationships between firms and SENAI.... We provide a brief description of the training agency for the tertiary sector (SENAC). We ... conclude that SENAI is not well adapted to deal with demands associated with the changes which the Brazilian labour market is undergoing. (DIPF/orig.). |
