Abstract	The essay compares the policies and strategies adopted in Brazil, Costa Rica, Senegal, Tanzania and Hungary towards education and training. All of them, when confronted with crisis had to cut public expenditure, but they differed with respect to the priority given to education, relative to other sectors; allocation of cuts in public expenditure between capital and recurrent, salary and non-salary expenditures; allocation of expenditure among levels and types of education; efficiency of resource use; capacity to mobilize new sources of income, for example by shifting costs of education from public to private sources. The essay compares the choices made in the five countries and highlights some of the effects, in terms of access to education and training, regional and social equity, and education quality. The final section of the essay draws some lessons from these comparisons, both about the effects of alternative policies and about policy options for the future. (DIPF/orig.).
