Abstract | This chapter compares the teaching of science in Portugal and England. Because of the differences that exist in education in the different countries of the United Kingdom (UK), the authors discuss only the situation in England, as this is where classroom observations were carried out. They compare the curricula as defined in official documents, and the practice as seen in a number of case study schools and institutions. The comparison is done in the following order: 1) a description of the structure of science education in schools 2) what principles organise the science curriculum? 3) how do the contents compare? 4) how are the pupils assessed? 5) what are the classroom approaches? 6) how are issues such as equal opportunities dealt with?
