AbstractIn recent years the media have themselves made the headlines. Special "media" sections have been created in newspapers, the TV weeklies regularly reveal the ins and outs of television production and the stories behind the programmes, whilst at the same time whole programmes are devoted to developments in advertising, and creative commercials receive awards in festivals. In secondary schools, students are fascinated by such activity, and a good teacher can make the most of this fascination; but it may also be illusory and create obstacles to learning. In fact, a totally different approach is needed when it comes to media education. The main aim of this booklet is to provide teachers, educators and decision-makers with indications as to how media education might develop over the 1990s. With this task in mind the authors, Len Masterman of Nottingham University and François Mariet of the University of Paris-Dauphine, have turned their thoughts to the years to come and made some predictions and recommendations. As an aid to understanding the future they have first of all considered it necessary to produce a clear definition of media education as it exists in Europe at present; and they go on to analyse its development and to examine the principal changes which have taken place in the past, and which continue to influence its development today.
