| Abstract | This report is arranged in two parts: The first gives an overview of the nature of transition, its objectives and the issues to be tackled if it is to be effective. It also sets out important criteria by which to evaluate transitional arrangements. The second part provides essential supporting data. It consists of five papers: a study of labour market trends with particular reference to the employment of those who are disabled; a summary of studies carried out in the United Kingdom, one of which looks at preparation for employment, another at developing self-advocacy and a third one at young people's responses to using technology in readiness for employment; an example of an individualised transition plan of the kind coming into use in the United States, and finally, a description and analysis of supported employment, which elaborates ideas and practices summarised in Part I.
