Abstract | The anti-bilingual movement that is spreading all over the United States has turned into one of the most controversial topics in the debate over the education of the linguistic minorities present in the nation. Ron Unz, the Californian millionaire who has managed to eliminate bilingual programs in California and Arizona ... is a clear representative of the assimilation movement, which advocates that immigrants must renounce to their vernacular languages and cultures in order to become integrated in American society. The present article summarizes the history of bilingualism in the United States, focusing on the decisions that have affected the education on minority students and explaining Unz' strategy to eliminate bilingual education, replacing it with an educational method based on his political ideas.
