Abstract | In examining contents related to the development of personal and social competence, this paper seeks to establish whether the textbooks have been built upon ideals introduced by the last Spanish educational reform (1990). The sample consisted of 8 textbooks of social, environmental and technological knowledge used in the second cycle of primary school (4 publishing houses). It was analysed how much importance, in terms of space and frequency, has been paid to personal and social knowledge, skills and values, such as self- knowledge, personal autonomy, knowledge of social groups or social problem solving. On the other hand, the authors addressed the qualitative analysis of the main dimensions. The findings show that textbooks pay more attention to the description of social groups and less to the dimensions related to self development and values. As far as self-development is concerned, habits of personal autonomy is by far the aspect with more presence in the textbooks. Publishers describe social groups, giving preference to contents that are very useful to know the family, the local community and the community of the Basque Country. Finally, one must point out that the percentage dedicated to the acquisition of values is very small and in most of the cases it is reduced to a few pages. (DIPF/Orig.) |
