Abstract | This issue compiles articles dealing with the status and projection of the future of education in Europe. The European Union, the Council of Europe, and the economy influence education on la levels... Bringing European concepts into education seems to be a great challenge because it needs to include the cultural and linguistic others. The roles of schools and universities have changed considerably to accommodate or in some instances to resist equality and equity for all. Educating citizens to become effective members of a community is an essential element if the community is to function and prosper. Margaret Sutherland discusses the conflicting trends in four different settings and finds that there is no agreement or clarity on what it means to be a good citizen, since the meaning seems to change from one country to another. However, there seems to be an urgency to know the meaning, in light of a united Europe. (DIPF/orig.) |
