Abstract | Understanding how young Portuguese university students mature during their studies by focusing on the process of adaptation to the university is the topic of this article. ... Gender differences are quite significant. First-year women students experience greater difficulties than men in adapting to university as an institution and to university courses. They are more dependent on family relationships, whilst men are more committed to extra-curriculum activities. The crucial question here is the extent to which academic experience contributes to building the same level of self- confidence in men and women. (DIPF/Orig.) |
