Abstract | The author studies the consequences of the choice of major subject on gender differences in terms of occupations and financial rewards. He first argues that segregation by gender in subject choice conforms to stereotypes and has not fundamentally changed over the last two decades. As a result, women and men have a different experience of higher education. Women are less likely to graduate with honours and are more likely to be employed in the public sector and to earn less than men. According to the study, the bias in the choice of major is apparently associated with some "typically female" character traits, such as being less ambitious and workaholic and caring more for others. The acticle is based on the data of the First Destination Survey which describe the occupational situation of UK graduates six months after graduation for the 1985, 1990 and 1995 cohorts.
