Abstract | Over the last decades, university level higher education in Latin America has undergone significant changes that are accompanied by tensions in several relevant aspects. Numerous new institutions highlight the distinction between research and teaching universities. Since all of the former train skilled professionals, while just some of the latter are able to do the same, evaluation and accreditation are strongly emerging as pertinent concepts. The abovementioned distinction is putting forward, again, the importance of a suitable faculty as a requisite for the quality of a university project, which leads to the need to monitor carefully the level and qualifications of the post- graduate programs that are offered. Likewise, there is a need to avoid amputation of curricula, which is frequently induced by an instrumental pragmatism in program design. Trends towards multidisciplinary centers and in favor of evaluation via accreditiation, are positive signs. Finally, the need to promote regional academic collaboration is underlined. (DIPF/Orig.) |
