| Abstract | Coherence in verbal discourse is influenced by the textual and situational context. The topic of the article is the influence of situational and social aspects on cohesion according to Halliday ( 1985), and on focus opposition according to Kallmeyer (1978). Following several empirical and theoretical studies, it can be hypothesized that cohesion is especially dependent on the strength of disagreement and the significance of the speaker's goals. The use of focus oppositions is expected to be influenced by the relationship between the interlocutors. These assumptions were investigated by means of a role-playing experiment in which participants (N = 131) took the role of an adolescent daughter in a conflict discourse with their mother and reacted to a given argument. Analyzing their utterances, the given hypotheses were confirmed. These experimental results expand the known principles of coherence through the addition of knowledge about causal determinants.
