Abstract | Improvement of early education (preschool and the lower grades of prirnary school) is seen as an important instrument in the fight against school failure in the Netherlands. ...There is fairly general agreement that the situated and direct interactions with the child are extremely important for the guidance of young children towards a better participation in school activities. These direct interactions constitute the so-called "proximal conditions" of development. In the Vygotskian approach of these proximal conditions in early education play activity is considered important. Play is seen as an activity that fosters the development of a community of young learners, that relates optimally to the dominant interests of the child, and that can provide the children with relevant tools for acting and thinking. From this perspective more detailed recommendations can be constructed that maybe of practical help for teachers who want to make the school a place for successfull learning and living for all pupils.
