Abstract | Adjustment challenges of international students in the USA have been well documented, but "few studies have focused on ... adjustment problems in terms of personal characteristics and experiential variables. The purpose of this study is to consider within-group adjustment of a particular segment of international students - those from the Republic of Korea - in terms of their personal characteristics and backgrounds. A range of adjustment challenges encountered by a population of Korean students in a research university are examined, and alternatives for institutional program development are suggested". The "challenges" examined were: 1) communication problems (language barriers which impede understanding of American student slang and of lessons and create anxiety in interactions with American students), 2) social-cultural adjustment (other forms of interpersonal relationships than at home, loss of recognition and social status), 3) personal-psychological adjustment ( culture shock and its effects on social behaviour and feelings of detachment.
