Abstract	This article is published in the context of the attempt to present the ' institutional response' by universities to the evaluation efforts and the pressure put on them by governments and society at large. It is based on the results of a comparative, empirical research project, EVALUE, which tried to elucidate how European universities 'live and implement' evaluation in its different dimensions. This article shows that in the course of the last few decades, research has become more diversified, both from a scientific and from a financial point of view. The authors analyse the consequences of these changes on the evaluation of research, which has gone from a traditional (internal and individual) to a more 'managerial' evaluation (external and collective). Globalisation has meant calling upon foreign experts, a preference for publications in English and the choice of certain pregnant themes. (DIPF/orig.)
