Abstract | In this article the concept of the "European Dimension" is analyzed according to its etymological, philosophical, historical and educational significations. Doing this the author proceeds as follows: " To gain the clearest possible idea of the expression's meaning and implications for education, it is necessary to study the issue by first listing the various common meanings given to it (Part 1: Emergence of the idea through an empirical method)) and then specifying their effects on education (Part 2: The European dimension in education: a factor for transformation and change?). This can probably provide some clues to a better appreciation of the current interest, importance, and consequences of incorporating this idea in the context of a Council of Europe project (Part 3: Inclusion of the European dimension in the project "A secondary education for Europe").
