Abstract | In this article the authors explore [a] proposition ... in relation to a particular aspect of cultural globalization under the guise of East- West educational exchange in the form of a TEMPUS (Trans European Mobility Programme for University Staff) project funded by the European Union (EU). It is no secret that the fundamental motivation for such schemes is the democratization of Eastern Europe through the westernization of the curriculum. By drawing upon the theory of dependency within a Marxist analysis of capitalist expansion and how it can be applied to educational change (which suggests that dependency is both a condition of and a consequence of the expansion of capitalism as a global economic system) the authors want to suggest that part of the hidden motivation for such projects also includes the expansion of capitalist markets to Eastern Europe.
