| Abstract | The paper presents an in-depth production study to examine the relation between global discourse structure and prosodic features such as pause duration and register variation. In the SDRS-model ( Asher 1993), the global structure of discourse is defined as a set of formal relations among the individual discourse segments. These relations are illustrated by an analysis of the opening paragraph of a short story. The paragraph was read by one female speaker, producing 18 intonational phrases. It turned out that length of a pause correlated well with an abstract discourse relation that Asher formally defined as d-dominance. Another important global parameter which integrates more than one intonational phrase and which correlates with the semantic discourse relations is intonational register. Following Clements (1981), the author presents a 2-level model of register feature representation and preliminary results concerning the interface between semantic SDRS-structure and phonological register.
