Abstract | The article argues that Friedrich Mergel is a hidden Jew, and that Die Judenbuche narrates a subtextual story about the danger of concealed Jewish identity in 19th-century Germany. The author contextualizes the novella within the nineteenth-century debate about Jewish emancipation and assimilation, and offers a close reading of the text in support of this thesis. The implications of this reading are then considered in light of the emergence of modern anti-Semitism at the end of the nineteenth century. (Verlag, adapt.). (IFS). |
