Abstract | [The author] suggests that here is a need to devote a special area to the evaluation of schools, since they are really the place where the educational task takes place and where its effectiveness has to be assessed. To achieve this, he considers it fundamental to combine the self-evaluation performed by the schools themselves with external evaluation, based on the view that the dialogue between them is the most powerful tool for achieving institutional improvement. Applying these principles in practice requires giving careful consideration to the possibility of developing evaluation centred on the school, but also changing the approach to evaluation in order to nake it less coercive.
