| Abstract | The study investigates discourse organization in the spoken language of classroom second language learners of German. Using native speaker baseline data for English and German, it examines the extent to which non-native speakers make use of transactional target devices to signal information status and to highlight information. The results suggest that learners operate with a very restricted repertoire which does not reflect the target range of syntactic constructions, deictic elements and discourse particles. Nor do learners appear to compensate for the lack of target-like discourse marking using inter-language devices or explicit lexical marking. The study questions whether subtle discourse marking necessarily develops only once learners have acquired more basic syntactic constructions and lexis with basic functions, or whether lack of exposure to naturalistic input and interaction in the classroom accounts for the observed development which may be subject to teaching. The results also raise questions concerning non-native speakers' ability to contribute and control interaction in conversation with native speakers and possible effects on their overall language development. Finally, it is suggested that the development of L2 transactional discourse marking requires more comprehensive and detailed studies against the background of descriptions of the spoken target language model.
