| Abstract | The article is concerned with humanism and its role in English teaching. It is meant as a critique of the assumptions and philosophy of some influental writers and educators in ESL/EFL; it is also meant constructively, as a suggestion of what can usefully be adopted from humanism, and how this can be reconciled with product-focused, genre-based approaches. The article begins with a brief survey of the relationship of humanism to English teaching, and goes on to draw a distinction between two types of humanism prominent in ESL/EFL today. Some criticisms that can be made of certain extreme forms of it are then suggested. An older rhetorical tradition is then outlined, and an explanation given of why the systematic study of grammar in its social context is so important. Some linguistic and cognitive benefits of this approach are advanced, while it is recognized that, in certain of its guises, humanism may still be of value. (Verlag, adapt.). |
