Abstract | This article is about the experience of Ben Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev, established in 1970. The Negev is a peripheral area which suffers from the economic dominance and growth preference of the nation's central areas. lt has lacked sufficient professional personnel, which adversely affects the provision of essential services. The Israeli government hoped that the location of the new institution in Beersheva, the major city in the Negev region would serve as a catalyst to develop the peripheral region's under-developed arid environment, increase the area's educational and economic opportunities and improve the general well-being of the population. ... The purpose of this article is to understand the relationship between the pursuit of goals of community involvement and relevance, and academic excellence. The longitudinal analysis explains what influenced the dominance, conflict or complement of these goals during BGU's first two decades. Emphasis is placed on recent developments at BGU which have strengthened ties between academic research and regional industrial enterprises. (DIPF/orig.) |
