Abstract | The Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia share common features, but also have marked differences. Their GDP per capita is close to that of some of developing countries, but their educational indicators do not greatly differ from those of most Western or Northern European countries. Pre-school enrolments are higher than in most European countries because of the greater participation of women in the economy, the strong demand for schooling from a rather educated society and the level of the teaching body. However these countries face great challenges in their teacher training systems and in the teaching profession which are undergoing a period of reconstruction. .. . This article highlights common characteristics and differences of traditions, conditions and ambitions of the four Central European countries concerning the pay, conditions, initial and in-service training of this rather heterogeneous profession.
