| Abstract | As cultural distinctions remain and intercultural contact increases, the importance of developing cross-cultural understanding and communicative competence in individuals working in culturally diverse environments is growing considerably. ...[In the paper] literature pertaining to the definition of cross-cultural adaptability or intercultural competence will be presented initially, followed by a brief summary of the results of studies designed to examine the impact of study abroad experiences on college students' intercultural competence. ...The subjects in the study consisted of 1430 undergraduate students at a mid-sized southeastern university. ... Students were requested to respond to several questions regarding their knowledge of a foreign language, exposure to a second language in the home, and cross cultural experiences, in addition to completing the Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI).
