| Abstract | From 1984 to 1989, the French 'lycées' faced a real demographic expansion. Is this current massification accompanied by a democratization of this school system ? The present studies bears on a descriptive approach of the various populations of the 'lycées' in one Academy' (School Board) with respect to the social origin, nationality, age of the students and proposes a social typology of the institutions. lt brings out the important disparities among the 'lycées' and sheds light on the mechanisms through which the schooling fields gets organized. The study shows that disparities among the 'lycées' have worsen and that the conventional hierarchy of school curricula is coupled with a hierarchy of the institutions. In conclusion, some propositions are put forward concerning school policies: how to combine the treatment of diversity with the pursuit of equal opportunities for all? How to avoid increasing inequalities among schools and at the same time promote the development of controlled local autonomy ? (DIPF/orig.) |
