Abstract | The 270 Israeli kibbutzim may be regarded as "utopia in reality ". They have been shaped by the ideas of the socialist-Zionist settlement movement in Palestine from the turn of the century. However they should not be seen as an exact copy of a model of collective living, but rather as the result of prolonged experiments under specific conditions in Palestine. The collective education in the children's and young people's houses, the most important characteristic of kibbutz education until the 80s, has been developed from situative and practical conditions and different elements of specific theories ( psychoanalysis, youth movement, new education movement), too. The aim of creating a "new man", a kibbutznik, who is willing to accept and live the ideological and social values of this way of life, should be realised by comprehensive education in the various collective institutions of the kibbutz. The changes of the last decades have reduced the collective and led to a rise of family influences and individual orientations. In the last decade strong processes of crises and transformations have been threatening the identity of the kibbutz. Therefore the kibbutz must experiment in new directions - this is also true for education. (DIPF/orig.) |
