Abstract | The author initially looks at the British and German tradition in defining academic freedom and its underlying values. Then the implementation of the two major freedoms is analyzed and compared: 1) Freedom of teaching which includes the control of the curricula and the appraisal of the quality of teaching, 2) freedom of learning : under this headline the "three unities" are described: the unity of knowledge, the unity of research and teaching and the unity of teachers and learners. Finally, the differences between the two countries are explained. (DIPF/Bi.). |
