| Abstract | Most speech comprehension tests used with aphasic patients are off-line. As a consequence, a subject's behavior is not tied in time to the variable being studied. Responses may correspond to the processing level under examination but often also reflect more general levels of processing which take into account context and pragmatic knowledge. Because of this problem, neurolinguists have shown increasing interest in using on-line tests which tap more directly into deficits at specific processing levels. The paper, describes in detail two online tests developed in French and presents the preliminary results obtained with left-hemisphere brain-damaged patients. The authors then examine the case of an aphasic patient whose results show that on-line tests are useful complements to more traditional off-line tests. Dissociations between these two types of tests and between processing levels are discussed. (Verlag, adapt.). |
