Abstract | In its role of producing information on education systems and on issues of common interest to EU member states, EURYDICE is of course trying to ensure the availability of reliable information on the teaching of languages. In 1992, we produced a comparative study on the teaching of modern foreign languages covering the 12 member states of the European Community. In 1994, in the first report it produced on educational indicators, 'Key Data on Education in the European Union', the EURYDICE European Unit included a specific dossier on languages. This year, we will undertake an update of the 1992 study, also covering the member states which did not appear in 1992 (Austria, Sweden and Finland), the EFTA / EEA countries and possibly the countries of Central and Eastern Europe which joined the activities of the network last year.
