| Abstract | The essay provides an analysis of Goethe'sWahlverwandtschaften that explains the logic of Ottilie's death and posthumous exhibition in terms of the dynamics of collecting and the history of the museum, an institution whose functions were only beginning to be defined by European societies at the time. An examination of the architect's collections and the tableaux vivants he stages indicates that the collections enact a disciplinary regimen through which the perception of art objects comes to replace "reality." The effects of the tableaux are particularly acute for their performers, most of whom directly internalize the aesthetic values of the art that is performed as social values. Although this internalization affects both men and women, the cultural values at stake are gender-specific. The essay's analysis of the gendered function of collections and display in the novel, then, may provide some indication of the ideological forces that accompany the museum function in Goethe's age.
